Povzetek: The paper tries to identify the effect of exceptional earthquake loading on Civil Engineering structures. Several reasons leading to exceptional action are identified and their effect on the structures is discussed. The main problems and the strategies to address them are summarized. The paper summarized the latest developments concerning the characteristic factors affecting the structural integrity and its evaluation. Three different cases are considered depending on the specific structural material (concrete, steel,masonry). Finally, conventional and non-conventional methods for the optimization of the structural response under the exceptional earthquake action are summarized.

Prispevek podaja pregled stanja na področju nosilnih jeklenih, armiranobetonskih in zidanih konstrukcij pri delovanju potresne obtežbe. Za vsako izmed naštetih skupin konstrukcij so opisno podane osnovne karakteristike, analitični modeli, optimizacija obnašanja, ojačitve ter možna izboljšanja konstrukcij z vidika prevzema potresne obtežbe.
